NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero)
Your personal identification number in Spain – required for almost everything: renting a home, opening a bank account, buying a car, signing an employment contract.
TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero)
A physical residence card for non-EU citizens (including UK nationals after Brexit). It proves your legal right to live in Spain and is needed for many official steps such as health care, starting a business, long-term stays, or re-entering Spain after travel.
👉 EU citizens usually only need the NIE plus local registration (empadronamiento).
